At Fox ESS, we understand that many system owners wish to actively manage and optimise the operation of their energy storage system. We therefore provide end users with access to a wide range of operational controls through the FoxCloud platform, including:
- Operating modes
- Mode Scheduler settings
- Battery charge/discharge schedules
- State of Charge (SOC) settings
- Time-of-use optimisation controls
These functions are specifically intended for day-to-day system management and energy optimisation.
However, certain advanced configuration areas within the system remain restricted to authorised installer-level accounts only.
Why Some Settings Are Restricted
Fox ESS inverters and battery systems are certified for operation within the UK under applicable grid connection and safety standards, including ENA G98 and G99 requirements.
As part of this certification process, the equipment is tested and approved using specific firmware configurations and protection settings. Certain parameters within the system directly relate to:
- Grid protection behaviour
- Voltage and frequency protection thresholds
- Anti-islanding protection
- Export limitation functions
- Network compliance settings
- Battery and inverter safety protections
Allowing unrestricted modification of these parameters could place the equipment outside of its certified operating conditions and potentially affect compliance with Distribution Network Operator (DNO) connection requirements.
For this reason, access to safety-critical and compliance-related configuration areas is restricted to authorised installer-level accounts responsible for commissioning and maintaining compliant operation of the system.
Industry Standard Practice
This approach is standard practice across the grid-connected inverter and battery storage industry. All major manufacturers maintain restricted access to safety-critical configuration areas in order to protect:
- User safety
- Electrical network stability
- Product certification validity
- Regulatory compliance
System Ownership & Access Rights
Ownership of the hardware does not automatically provide unrestricted access to all firmware-level configuration areas.
As with many modern connected technologies – including vehicles, boilers, EV chargers, and other safety-regulated electrical equipment – certain engineering and compliance-related settings remain manufacturer and installer controlled to ensure continued safe and compliant operation.
Installer Access
Installer-level accounts are intended for certified installation professionals responsible for:
- System commissioning
- Regulatory compliance
- DNO-related configuration
- Safety verification
These permissions are not based on ownership of the equipment, but on responsibility for compliant installation and operation.
Support for Advanced Users
Fox ESS remains committed to providing flexible system control for end users wherever possible. Where users require assistance with operational optimisation or specific system behaviour, our support team will always endeavour to assist within the limits of compliance and product safety requirements.
